Sudden Strike 4 - Africa: Desert War

Sudden Strike 4 has received another addon campaign, this time focusing on the World War II battles that took place in Northern Africa. We checked out the new content on Steam.

Africa – Desert War is the third expansion to feature in Sudden Strike 4, following on from Road to Dunkirk and Finland – Winter Storms. The Sudden Strike 4: Complete Collection offers fans the ultimate World War II strategy experience, containing the main Sudden Strike 4 game plus all five previously released DLCs: Battle of Kursk, Road to Dunkirk, Finland – Winter Storm, Africa – Desert War and The Pacific War. Sudden Strike 4 sends you off on three extensive campaigns set.

Africa: Desert War, as the expansion is called, is the third major expansion for the game in the year since the release of the original game last summer. While the first focused on the familiar battlegrounds surrounding Dunkirk, the second expansion did a great job in highlighting a less familiar arena of operations by shifting the action to Finland. Desert War takes a similar approach, but exchanges the icy colds of the north to Africa’s sandy plains.

As with the previous expansions, the new content is a mix of new vehicles (about a dozen per army), new historic commanders to play with as well as two mini campaigns. For me, the latter has been the main draw for all of Sudden Strike 4’s addons, and Africa: Desert War is no exception. The Axis side is especially interesting this time around, as the mini campaign gives you access to the Italian forces – something rarely seen in real time strategy titles.

The change in venue means that, unless you’re a history/WW II buff, you’ll be seeing plenty of unfamiliar battles unfold. They’re fairly evenly divided between Egypt, Tunisia and Libya, with the battle of El Alamein standing out as a more familiar scenario. New tactical options mainly come from the ability to hide your movements in sandstorms and use that to your advantage.

Despite the new vehicles and commanders, the Africa: Desert War campaign plays and feels similar to the existing Sudden Strike 4 content. That’s definitely not a bad thing though, as it’s been one of my favorite strategy games in recent years. If you’re also still actively playing, then Desert War should be a no-brainer – although I’m beginning to think that Sudden Strike 4 would have benefitted from a season pass-like option for the game. The new mini campaigns are interesting and a lot of fun, and taking charge of the Italian forces is a refreshing change as well, but everything does still feel like you’re playing the same game that came out a little over a year ago. Great news for fans of the game, but Desert War won’t lure in any newcomers.

About the game

Based on the events of the Western Desert Campaign during World War II, the Sudden Strike 4: Africa – Desert War add-on centers around some of the most notorious desert skirmishes in North Africa. Choose from five new highly decorated generals, such as Erwin Rommel and Sir Richard O’Connor. Lead the Axis powers in their mission to invade Libya, Tunisia and Egypt to crush the unprepared American forces in the Battle of the Kasserine Pass, or take command of the Allies and relive the battle that turned the tide of the Western Desert Campaign – the Second Battle of El Alamein. Fight in an unforgiving and harsh desert setting with sandstorms to challenge your tactical wits.

Highlights

Sudden Strike 4: Africa – Desert War features two new mini-campaigns with six new singleplayer missions based on the events of the North African campaign during World War II.
In the Axis campaign, you will start the Italian advance on Egypt to take the city of Sidi Barrani, besiege the city of Tobruk and take over its harbor, as well as break through the Kasserine Pass in Tunisia. In the Allied campaign, take part in Operation Compass and retake the village of Sidi Barrani, relive the watershed of the Western Desert Campaign - the Second Battle of El Alamein, and break through the German defensive line in the Battle of Mareth.
Five new doctrine commanders to choose from: on the side of the Axis, choose from the highly decorated German general Erwin Rommel, as well as three additional Italian commanders, such as renowned field marshal Giovanni Messe. On the Allies side, you can now choose the legendary Sir Richard O’Connor as an armored general.
Sudden Strike 4: Africa – Desert War introduces 30+ new vehicles, including an all new medical truck, the Marder II Tank Destroyer, the British Bishop SPG, as well as the Italian Semovente da 105/25 Assault Gun.
